An ENDING To Launch A BEGINNING – 

With PAWS, PANTALOONS, and STEAM WHISTLE TUNES

It was a life celebration fit for a king… or, in this case, a dog.

Imagine visiting a cemetery when your companion suddenly beckons you to “look at the clown going by on the road over there.”  One might immediately assume an errant driver was speeding recklessly in this designated zone of quiescence.  

But, no, this was a literal reference to an actual clown rather than the appointment of a derogatory assignation.  For heaven’s sake!  Clowns don’t belong at a cemetery!  Or do they?  

On February 16, 2013, amid hallowed burial grounds at Venice Memorial Gardens, there was no need to admonish anyone with a directive to “quit clowning around.”  In fact, in this milieu that ordinarily invokes subdued reverence, antics and activities common to the Big Top were the order of the day.  Against a backdrop of crypts and columbaria, a circus of sorts “came to town.”

It was a sunny day when the circus theme materialized here to commemorate the life and conduct the burial of a dog named Gizmoe, who had been a cherished companion of one of the funeral directors.  Her interment served as a prelude to the grand opening of the cemetery’s new pet burial section half an hour later.

The honored decedent’s pink casket was actually an urn vault utilized for this alternative purpose.

The fete began with the arrival of a carnival entourage. The adapted casket was on a wagon pulled by a singularly notable pallbearer of the day – Lucky Star, a miniature white horse who later showcased a series of tricks.  Her owner served as the circus ringmaster. Chucko, a former Ringling Brothers clown, played a pivotal role throughout the conjoint event as a prominent figure during the service and grand opening proceedings.  Two grief therapy dogs from the Florida Humane Society – a golden doodle and a long-haired dachshund – were at the rear of the processional.

The event was open to the public, including canine companions.  Eighty-four humans and sixteen dogs attended the committal service, conducted by two of the cemetery’s funeral directors under a pergola.  Public officials and local media personnel were on hand to glean material for news articles and television documentation.

The celebrant-led service included references to Gizmoe’s typical behaviors and characteristics.  Individuals who shared her life relayed reminiscent experiences.  A popular poem, “The Rainbow Bridge,” was read, which inspires comfort by alluding to the possibility of pet owners reuniting with their pets once they, too, have died.  Family members released ten pink balloons prior to the release of fifty multi-colored, circus-themed balloons amid a backdrop of relevant musical pieces.

Pink rose petals lined the dog’s grave.  After placement of the casket in it, some were also sprinkled on top of it.

The distinguished dog’s personality was captured even for her burial.  Because she had been anti-social, two spaces were utilized, with her body facing backward, so no other animal’s body would be buried close to her at a later time.  The plot is located in the section of the cemetery designated for upright markers.  

An unmistakable celebration of life was the order of the day on this occasion when an esteemed pet was laid to rest.  It was accentuated by clowns, calliope background music, balloons, popcorn, snow cones, and cotton candy.

The theme was maintained throughout the grand opening ceremony that followed Gizmoe’s affair.  Though this type of milieu ordinarily is conspicuously uncommon in a cemetery, if ever a circus would appear on burial grounds anywhere, the Sarasota environs would be a logical place.  It oozes Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey history and is still percolating with the company’s people and artifacts.  Because of its infiltration here, in the ‘40s and ‘50s this epicenter for a popular pastime became known as a circus town.  Accommodations for “The Greatest Show on Earth” included winter headquarters in Sarasota, often motivating personnel and their descendants to establish permanent, lifelong residency here.  A museum now houses an extensive art collection from their world travels as well as circus memorabilia, such as wardrobes, props, and equipment along with newspaper clippings and other documentary accounts. 

So it’s not surprising that authentic performers would be on hand for this special event.  In fact, three circus dynasties – the Espana, Anatasini, and Herriott families – were represented.  Entertainment included a classic spinning plates routine, acrobatics, and spins a la the German wheel and the “steel wheel of destiny.”

Of course, a festival with this motif called for edible embellishments.  A Venice caterer provided hors d’oeuvres – pizza bites, finger sandwiches, and pigs in a blanket.  A local supermarket made it possible for the canine and feline guests to enjoy treats as well.  

After the main events, people were given an opportunity to tour the grounds in golf carts, which included visits to the pet crematory.

Needless to say, this was a distinctive and memorable way to introduce the community to the addition of pet services at this memorial park.  The blueprint that had been conceptualized in response to a current funerary trend had been transformed into a new facility.

And in the process of publicizing its availability, the human tendency to feel remarkable affection toward pets had been colorfully accentuated.  

For now, Gizmoe’s headstone dominates the landscape of this heavenly animal kingdom. 

As time passes, the local canine celebrity will have more company within this acre of burial territory. Graves for other animals’ cremated or whole body remains will increasingly appear. 

If an owner wishes to stay close to a beloved pet, human graves adjacent to the pet section can accommodate that wish.  

Services will continue to be conducted under the pergola that serves as the central focal point for the pet burial grounds.
  

Meanwhile, under a headstone remindful of her memorable memorial gala, Gizmoe is resting in peace.

BODIES IN MOTION!

For someone with a convincing imagination, strolling around the grounds of the Haisley Funeral and Cremation establishment might feel as if traversing the unconfined campus of a summer camp… minus the lakeside fleet of kayaks, tennis courts, and campfire pits.

The spread of several buildings suggests a history of their progressive acquisition, each for specific purposes.  Funeral home owners around the country have often purchased properties adjacent to their primary site in order to convert them for accommodation of additional funerary functions.  A former bowling ally, food market, or hardware store are the sorts of shops that may be proximally located, lending practicality for reconstruction projects that reflects burgeoning  trends.  Changed industry circumstances, particularly the steadily increasing rate of cremation curtailing a need for more traditional products and services, have prompted revised business strategies directed toward alternative revenue sources.  A wave of reception centers exemplifies this type of development. 

Here, modern design exaggeration is trumped by original character.  Rather than hopping on the radical reconstruction bandwagon, the vintage footprint has essentially been retained, lending a sense of classic old-world charm.

As is typical in general, a large sign in front of the building closest to the road identifies the name and nature of the enterprise.

Though the stone marker is beautifully enhanced by a surrounding flowerbed and prominent foliage, chances are, people driving by may barely give the actual name on it a second glance because it lacks titillation.

If attracting attention is an objective... hypothetically and whimsically contrived, this identity representation could be replaced by one that would aptly allude to the divergent complexion of the premises – the physical layout of the quarters.  A larger placard with the addition of an eye-catching slogan would likely command more than the fleeting glimpse ordinarily dependent on drivers’ peripheral vision.  It might declare definitively, “Haisley Funeral and Cremation Services… A Mecca for Healthy Living!” 

Probably upon catching sight of this oxymoronic proclamation, a perplexed reaction would invoke cogitation, conversation, and maybe even chuckles.  One doesn’t routinely equate wellness with a funeral home!  

By extending the scope of focus beyond the immediate signage, a clue is readily apparent.   

Another sign announces the presence of a fitness center on the premises.  Take a second look for verification because such an amenity for the hale and hearty is not something one is apt to find as part of a funeral home’s facilities.  Apparently, besides their usual patrons they must appreciate able-bodied clients! 

The building used for this purpose blends with the milieu on the cusp of a residential street.  The studio is located in the front section  – perhaps a former living room when it was someone's private home.

The inspiration for this zone of rejuvenating exercise came from the owner’s wife.  The site is perpetually alive with activity, as evidenced by a full schedule of regular pilates classes.

While standing near the front door, listening to an instructor energetically dictating the moves, it was obvious there were a lot of beating hearts inside.  

Let’s not ignore a more mundane aspect of this funerary business that promotes health.  It is simply the fact that this is a fresh air funeral home situated under sun-drenched Florida skies.  People who go there for various purposes are apt to walk outdoors for one reason or another rather than staying inside more conventional multi-purpose buildings that address everything under one roof. 

Mourners who arrive for a funeral or memorial service would likely go first to the chapel, which is the most prominent edifice close to the road.  A crematory is located at the back of it.

Basic wooden rocking chairs facing the entrance summon relaxation.  People may notice wreaths hanging on the front doors, as often seen at private homes, implying cordiality.  Perhaps these quintessential decorations are there to represent the circle of life or the notion of immortality in spite of death.  Whatever interpretations one might ascribe to such universally prevalent symbols imbued with multi-faceted meanings, they invariably signal a folksy welcome. 

After the service, guests might take a short walk to reach the reception site, located in the same building as the fitness studio.  Upon arriving at the screened porch where the entrance is located, one could easily feel as if approaching a neighbor’s home to ask for a cup of sugar.  

This gathering area invites further appreciation of the great outdoors.

The room inside has seating for eighty people when there's a sit-down meal or it can accommodate one hundred folks less formally.  It is designated for affairs in conjunction with commemorative services, but it also serves as a meeting space for non-profit community functions.  Here, also, restorative measures for grieving individuals are addressed through monthly After Care meetings.  They are managed by a coordinator with a background in ministry, counseling, and education who has authored books about relationships; the funeral home’s chaplain participates as well.  Featured guests whose specialities relate to special needs during bereavement are invited to provide input.

The kitchen adjacent to both the fitness studio and the reception room triggers recollections of friends stopping by idly for an impromptu chat in days of yore before societal frenzy intervened.  

Tucked behind an apron of trees, a separate building might be considered headquarters for operations here.  Swings along the entrance pathway beckon a time out for the weary.

This is where people go to make arrangements at the time of a death.  Though  encompassing a small area, the room for discussions with staff is comfortably appointed.    

Anyone with the wisdom to contemplate advance planning is directed to a building specifically for that purpose.

Flanked by administrative office space on either side, the main room features a spacious area for consideration of options in a setting marked by all the comforts of home.  

The conveniently situated microwave and refrigerator advance a consistency of efforts to keep bodies energized and in full-steam-ahead mode… the healthful alternative to death!     

Increasingly, pet loss services are being incorporated into the array of provisions at funeral homes.  Here, simple or deluxe cremation packages are offered in addition to pet burial facilitation.     

Yet another building houses a cremation retort used exclusively for animals. 

A service vehicle transports pets from homes and veterinary offices to the facility.

The detached units of operation scattered on this property come together collectively as an enterprise defined by unpretentious, homespun warmth… akin to a patchwork quilt, of sorts.  A relaxed chat with a funeral director while absorbing rays of sunshine in front of the office, an interaction with a pre-need counselor who oozed jolly enthusiasm, and a prolonged outdoor encounter with the crematory operator when walking between buildings all contributed to this impression.  A flavor of gracious Southern ease prevailed.  

This impression was advanced also through observations of emblematic significance.  Ornamental pineapples festoon framed wall hangings, the roadside signs, a banner that flies from the porch of the fitness studio, and are configured as lamps flanking the chapel doors and on lampposts.  Conclusive evidence of this as a logo is recognized upon seeing one on the side of the pet vehicle and on business cards, as well.  Furthermore, a staple of grief support services in the form of a newsletter is titled, the “Pineapple Press.”

Probably this design element was chosen for a reason other than its salubrious attributes.  

Rather, these fruits of ancient lore attest further to the predominant attitude of this business.  “The pineapple is recognized as a traditional expression of ‘welcome’ throughout the South and in areas along the Eastern Seaboard.  Appearing on all sorts of décor – from door knockers to quilts – the fruit symbolizes those intangible assets we appreciate in a home: warmth, welcome, friendship and hospitality.”   Here, indeed, this funeral home is a “home” for funeral service… and a haven for healthful invigoration.

At the Greenbriar Crematory and Pet Cemetery it’s all about love – authentic love for the four-legged creatures humans befriend during their lives. 

The owners are animal advocates, evidenced by a Facebook page brimming with measures of support for a variety of germane community causes and for their staff of dedicated workers.  Some of their initiatives have included an annual “Paws for A Cause” fundraiser festival, rescue management, and involvement in animal organizations. Proclamations of satisfaction and appreciation from both clients and veterinarians attest to their commitment. Formerly a kennel, in 2004 this facility was converted to provide end-of-life services specifically for pets.    

Before entering the front door, one can’t help but notice the sprightly acrobatics of koi fish sloshing around in sparkling waters accented by scintillating beams of sunshine.  Perhaps their rampant animation reminds visitors that life goes on, in spite of the death concerns handled beyond the entrance to the adjacent building.  Maybe these creatures are agents of connotation:  “Many of the attributes of the koi symbolize several lessons and even trials individuals often encounter in life. The koi fish has a powerful and energetic life force, demonstrated by its ability to swim against currents and even travel upstream.”

A rudimentary reception area is complemented by displays of cremation jewelry, especially pendant necklaces that accommodate small amounts of cremated remains. 

But the main attraction is a welcoming committee comprised of a receptionist along with an attentive parrot and two dogs – one enjoying a morning snooze and the other meandering around the premises. 

An arrangement room mimics those of human funeral home ilk, complete with relevant products attractively displayed on either side of a stained glass window featuring birds.

An assortment of urns is available for perusal. 

Memorial stones can be chosen there, as well. 

Unlike the wooden, metal, or biodegradable caskets for human remains, animal burial containment is constructed of hard plastic, in varying sizes with the option of cloth linings.  

A crematory is conveniently situated next to a private visitation and viewing room where final moments can be spent with the deceased animal. 

When the blinds are open, the body’s introduction into the crematory retort can be viewed through an observation window.  Owners appreciate an opportunity to witness this process as a means of identity assurance.  

The retort equipment looks and functions like the chambers used for human cremation. 

A nearby cemetery for burial of either animals' bodies or cremated remains is part of this establishment's twenty-acre property.  Human cremated remains of several owners are buried alongside their former companions.  This is one of the few cemeteries where the option is permissible.  

An evocative plaque greets visitors at the entrance to these grounds.

The Sunset Pavilion affords a place for contemplative remembrance and commemoration. A metal memorial photo plate bearing an inscription can be purchased in varying sizes to be affixed to its walls.

For someone’s first visit to a pet cemetery, the prospect of exploring it may be compelling somewhat because of a desire to compare its characteristics to those of human cemeteries.  In what ways are they different?  Actually, anyone who expects to find significant disparities is apt to be surprised upon discovering the extent of their similarities. 

A new grave, freshly dug by hand, is prepared for an imminent bodily burial.  

One of the owners had been the caretaker for Ryko, a police K-9 dog that Greenbriar had purchased for the department.  He had arrived from the Netherlands seven years prior to his death in September, 2012, due to cancer.  

In January, 2015, a dedication ceremony attended by law enforcement and elected officials was held here at a memorial garden established in tribute to him and other canine members of the Apopka K-9 unit, whose names are listed on the monument.    

Though the graves are arranged symmetrically in this pet milieu, the floral adornments over them mimic those on human burial grounds.  People are welcome to decorate the graves during any of the holidays, which they often do.  Visitors are frequent, sometimes placing dog bones and cat treats over the sites.  

One site is even graced by the presence of a fresh bouquet.  

Here, a sign of endearment is in the form of a balloon that has been added to the mix.

Favorite toys are reminiscent of playful times spent together. 

Facsimile statuettes serve as identity representations.  

St. Francis of Assisi earned the title of patron saint of animals and ecology because of his love for all animals, having referred to them as his brothers and sisters.  A tribute statue here represents his compassionate attitude.

Ceramic photos are popular additions to memorial stones everywhere, regardless of the subject's species.  

A memorial bench is one of many options available at cemeteries of all kinds.

"Family estate" plots are common at human burial grounds.  Here, family members of a different sort may rest in peace together, as well.   

The preceding pictorial overview of this cemetery’s features is comprehensive in scope for the sake of emphasizing a reality of life… and death.  Pets are important to the well-being and emotional health of humans as they travel together during their earthly journeys.   An animal buddy may be "man’s best friend" or at least a paramount source of interaction and pleasure.

The permanence of detachment from this type of symbiotic relationship sometimes is as painful as it might be in response to human demise. 

The expressions of sentiment and devotion witnessed at this cemetery blatantly announce how passionately the owners of these pets had treasured them as undeniably significant companions.  The flowers, toys, photos, and solar lights garnishing memorial stones, statues, and benches on this property that’s designed specifically for animals are just like the objects on burial grounds for human beings.  Their presence drives home the point that loss of a partner, whether human or animal, can trigger profound grief.  In acknowledging the death of a cherished pet, memorial measures such as these may be an important aspect of the healing process.

A memorial page on the Greenbriar website serves as a personal channel for remembrance. Owners can submit a picture of their deceased pet along with a written piece. Their bereavement is addressed through availability of trained personnel, including two certified grief specialists and a pet funeral director on staff.  Regardless of the type of animal whose life has ended, human needs that surface when kinship ties have been severed are recognized and addressed, just as they are at traditional funeral homes for people.
